Abstract

Purpose

Randomised controlled trial (RCT) methodology is viewed as the gold standard in evaluating the impact of interventions. Recruitment problems present one threat to the validity of RCTs, yet the barriers to recruitment are poorly understood. The purpose of this study is to identify obstacles to recruitment in a personality disorder (PD) treatment trial, with a view to suggesting ways of overcoming these obstacles.

Design/methodology/approach

A discussion group of 13 staff involved in the trial was held to identify barriers to recruitment. The information was subject to thematic analysis.

Findings

Eight themes were identified, and three overarching themes: reluctance to diagnose and preference for treating symptoms; increasing the burden and jeopardising other services; and lack of confidence in treatment and in treatment as usual.

Practical implications

Suggestions for minimising recruitment obstacles include careful site selection and protocol negotiation; education and training about PD; continued promotion of both research in general and the specific trial; and assurances about good research practice.

Originality/value

Recruitment is a common problem in RCTs, and the paper addresses this issue, not only in identifying obstacles to recruitment but also in offering suggestions to other trialists for minimising the obstacles.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the heat transfer phenomenon occurring between heated walls and impinging fuel, showing the strict relationship between cooling effect after impingement and enhancing of wallfilm formation. The study focuses on a fundamental task in terms of pollutant emissions in internal combustion engines, aiming at giving a major contribution to the optimization of energy conversion systems in terms of environmental impact.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on experimental campaigns relevant at taking measurements of an impinging spray over a heated wall in a confined vessel. The results, in both qualitative and quantitative terms (measurements of liquid and vapour radial penetration and thickness), are numerically reproduced by a computational model based on a Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes approach, properly validated through customized sub-models.

Findings

The paper provides quantitative results about the agreement between radial penetration and vapour thickness between measurements and simulation, achieved by taking into account the cooling effect determined by the fuel impingement. This validation of the numerical model allows the author to give more considerations about the link between wall temperature and wallfilm formation.

Originality/value

This paper presents an original approach for the simulation of wall heat transfer, by imposing a boundary condition at the wall that may consider the heat conduction and temperature cooling given by fuel impingement in both lateral and normal directions. The classical Dirichlet boundary condition, characterized by imposing a fixed temperature value, is, instead, replaced by an approach based on calculating the unsteady process that couples the heat fluxes between the fluid and the solid material and within the solid itself.

Abstract

Purpose

H2O, CO2 and CO are three main species in combustion systems which have high volume fractions. In addition, soot has strong absorption in the infrared band. Thus, H2O, CO2, CO and soot may take important roles in radiative heat transfer. To provide calculations with high accuracy, all of the participating media should be considered non-gray media. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to study the effect of non-gray participating gases and soot on radiative heat transfer in an inhomogeneous and non-isothermal system.

Design/methodology/approach

To solve the radiative heat transfer, the fluid flow as well as the pressure, temperature and species distributions were first computed by FLUENT. The radiative properties of the participating media are calculated by the Statistical Narrow Band correlated K-distribution (SNBCK), which is based on the database of EM2C. The calculation of soot properties is based on the Mie scattering theory and Rayleigh theory. The radiative heat transfer is calculated by the discrete ordinate method (DOM).

Findings

Using SNBCK to calculate the radiative properties and DOM to calculate the radiative heat transfer, the influence of H2O, CO2, CO and soot on radiation heat flux to the wall in combustion system was studied. The results show that the global contribution of CO to the radiation heat flux on the wall in the kerosene furnace was about 2 per cent, but that it can reach up to 15 per cent in a solid fuel gasifier. The global contribution of soot to the radiation heat flux on the wall was 32 per cent. However, the scattering of soot has a tiny influence on radiation heat flux to the wall.

Originality/value

This is the first time H2O, CO2, CO and the scattering of soot were all considered simultaneously to study the radiation heat flux in combustion systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the values of children using Minimally Invasive Education (MIE) kiosks and identify any changes in these values as a result of using the kiosks.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample consists of 85 children residing at the Vivekananda Camp. There are 44 boys with an average age of 11.62 years and 41 girls with an average of 11.75 years. Average education level of these children is up to the 8th class. Girls generally stop going to school after the 8th class as they are expected to prepare for marriage. The evaluation is based on the 12 key universal values specified (for children between 8 and 14 years) by the Living Values Educational Program, which are: peace, respect, cooperation, freedom, happiness, honesty, humility, love, responsibility, simplicity, tolerance, and unity. A questionnaire based on the above values is developed. Originally, the questionnaire consisted of 30 situational‐based questions with multiple choices. In the present paper, values at two time points are studied. First time point is during August 2004, prior to kiosk installation and second time point after seven months of exposure to MIE kiosk (April 2005).

Findings

The results clearly indicate that there has been a shift in the importance given to values by children prior to the learning station and after working for seven months at the learning station. It is interesting to note a shift in the range itself. In August 2004, the range was between 41 percent (helping others) and 79 percent (honesty) and in April 2005 it is from 46 percent (helping others) to 82 percent (politeness). In other words, values have moved up or gained more importance in the lives of the children. Apart from honesty and tolerance where a dip in the post‐phase is found, no change is perceived in academic excellence (74 percent) and religion (66 percent). For the remaining six values, there has been an increase in how strongly children feel that existence of these values in the post‐phase (ambition, politeness, kindness, consideration, teamwork, and cooperation).

Originality/value

Young children can develop values through their own experiential behavior and modeling. The paper shows that learning at MIELS emerges as an ongoing process, embedded in the environment.

Abstract

Earlier work often referred to as the ‘hole in the wall’ experiments has shown that groups of children can leam to use public computers on their own. This paper presents the method and results of an experiment conducted to investigate whether such unsupervised group learning in shared public spaces is universal. The experiment was conducted with ‘hole in the wall’ (minimally invasive education, or MIE) kiosks in 23 locations in rural India. Focus groups in each location were tested for computer literacy for 9 months. Results, which are discussed in the paper, show that groups of children can leam to use computers and the Internet on their own, irrespective of who or where they are. The paper also discusses the engineering considerations for building such ‘hole in the wall’ computers in public spaces.

Abstract

Outlines the US development of the “too‐big‐to‐fail” (TBTF) doctrine following the collapse of the Continental Illinois Bank, reviews relevant research and explores the impact on the efficiency of the banking system. Uses 1983‐1985 call report data, explains the methodology and presents the results, which analyse economies and diseconomies of scope and scale between different types of loans; and levels of inefficiency for TBTF and non‐TBTF banks. Shows that TBTF banks had the greatest increase in inefficiency following Continental’s failure but reduced this in the following year, as did small banks which did not benefit from complete depository coverage. Confirms that the TBTF doctrine increased stability for all banks, but particularly those covered by the doctrine.

Man has been seeking an ideal existence for a very long time. In this existence, justice, love, and peace are no longer words, but actual experiences. How ever, with the American preemptive invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq and the subsequent prisoner abuse, such an existence seems to be farther and farther away from reality. The purpose of this work is to stop this dangerous trend by promoting justice, love, and peace through a change of the paradigm that is inconsistent with justice, love, and peace. The strong paradigm that created the strong nation like the U.S. and the strong man like George W. Bush have been the culprit, rather than the contributor, of the above three universal ideals. Thus, rather than justice, love, and peace, the strong paradigm resulted in in justice, hatred, and violence. In order to remove these three and related evils, what the world needs in the beginning of the third millenium is the weak paradigm. Through the acceptance of the latter paradigm, the golden mean or middle paradigm can be formulated, which is a synergy of the weak and the strong paradigm. In order to understand properly the meaning of these paradigms, however, some digression appears necessary.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to test the spectral line-based weighted sum of gray gases (SLW) method in axisymmetric geometries with particles and high temperature gradients.

Design/methodology/approach

An SLW model is coupled with Trivic’s mean wavelength approach to estimate the radiative heat fluxes at the wall of an enclosure and to the base wall of the rocket exhaust, thereby subsequently studying the effect of concentration variation of the gases and particles in these cases. Radiative transfer equation is solved using modified discrete ordinates method. Anisotropic scattering is modeled using transport approximation.

Findings

Two cases considered show the importance of particle emission and scattering in the rocket plume base heating problems. In cases involving only gases, the concentration of H2O tends to have more impact on the flux values than any other gas.

Originality/value

A full model of gases with particles in an axially varying temperature field is reported. Such cases are very common in practical applications. The present methodology gives more insight and a firm handle on the problem vis-a-vis other traditional techniques.
